Bridging to the DSW diploma
How to turn your Certificate of Apprenticeship into a full DSW College Diploma with a few extra courses and possibly a placement.
- steps to bridge
- 3
Bridging means using your completed apprenticeship toward a full Developmental Services Worker Diploma. You take the remaining courses and complete a field placement, if the college requires one. Because much of your apprenticeship coursework counts, it usually costs less and takes less extra time than starting the diploma from scratch. Each college decides what transfers.
The three steps
- Contact the college you want to bridge with once you have your Certificate of Apprenticeship, and ask about its bridging process and requirements. It is usually best to bridge at the same college where you completed your apprenticeship courses.
- Send in your Certificate of Apprenticeship as proof that you have completed the required on-the-job and in-class hours.
- Work with the program coordinator to arrange your remaining courses and your field placement, if one is required.
What to expect
Diploma requirements vary between colleges and can change. Ask the coordinator exactly which of your apprenticeship courses transfer and what remains, rather than relying on old advice.
Why people do it
Some employers ask for the diploma. The apprenticeship lets you keep working while you earn your Certificate of Apprenticeship, and the bridge adds the diploma afterwards. If you plan to bridge, raise it with your coordinator early.
