How classes are delivered
Depending on the college, courses run by day release (one day a week, year-round), in the evening, or online. Most apprentices take one or two courses a semester. Class time is typically two to three hours a week per course, plus several hours a week of your own reading and assignments.
Your sponsoring employer is expected to help adjust your work schedule so you can attend your scheduled classes. Register early: classes fill up.
If you have previous related college education, you may be eligible for a transfer credit. Ask your program coordinator.
The four colleges
| College | Contact | Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Fanshawe College | Holly Duff, hduff@fanshawec.ca | All classes online over Zoom, typically one day a week, 8am to 4pm |
| St. Clair College | Kim Smart, ksmart@stclaircollege.ca | In-person day classes scheduled through the week |
| Loyalist College | onlineapprentice@loyalistcollege.com | Online |
| Georgian College | Alison Bates, alison.bates@georgiancollege.ca | In-person day classes scheduled through the week |
Skilled Trades Ontario records your college preference and shares it with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, which administers in-class training. Your college's program coordinator then contacts you to arrange registration.
Getting the most from it
Attend every class you can, and tell your instructor as early as possible if you have to miss one. Ask questions and join the discussion. Ask for help early if a topic is hard or you are falling behind. Keep your program coordinator updated on scheduling conflicts or life changes. Use the college's tutoring, writing support, library and academic advising; they are there for apprentices too.
Questions about courses, fees or timing? Ask your college's program coordinator.
